Activation & Enrollment

Registration codes, SIM setup, carrier provisioning, and enrollment best practices for the TrikTraks Tracker.

What is a Registration Code?

A Registration Code is a unique alphanumeric token assigned to each TrikTraks tracker at the factory. It is used once — during initial activation — to bind the device to your tenant account. After activation, the device operates using per-device credentials and no longer needs the Registration Code.

Keep it safe

The Registration Code is printed on the device label and included in the box. Store it securely — you will need it if the device is ever re-enrolled.

  • Unique per device — no two trackers share the same code.
  • One-time use — consumed during first activation.
  • Not a license key — license levels are assigned separately by your admins.
  • Found on the device label and the included documentation card.

Pre-Activation Checklist

Before activating your tracker, confirm the following items are ready. Skipping any step may cause the activation to fail or require re-enrollment.

  • You have the device Registration Code (on the label or documentation card).
  • A compatible nano-SIM with an active data plan is available.
  • You have administrator access to the TrikTraks Management Console.
  • The device has a stable power source (vehicle connection or charged battery).
  • You are in an area with adequate cellular signal coverage.

SIM Setup

The TrikTraks tracker requires a nano-SIM with a data plan. The SIM is not included and must be sourced from a supported carrier. The device supports both standard and M2M (machine-to-machine) SIM cards.

SIM RequirementsNano-SIM, 10 MB/month+, 4G LTE Cat-M1 or NB-IoT, PIN lock disabled
InstallationPower off → open tray → insert gold-contacts-down → close & power on
SIM handling

Never insert or remove the SIM while the device is powered on — this may corrupt the SIM or damage the tray.

Carrier Provisioning

The tracker auto-detects the carrier APN in most regions. If your carrier requires a custom APN, you can set it via the Management Console after activation or push it via OTA configuration.

Auto-Provisioning (recommended)

  • Device scans for carrier automatically on first boot.
  • Works with most major carriers out of the box.
  • No manual APN configuration required.

Manual APN (if required)

  1. Log into the Management Console.
  2. Navigate to Devices → Settings → Network.
  3. Enter your carrier APN, username, and password.
  4. Push the config via OTA — device applies on next check-in.

Activation Steps

Activation registers the device under your tenant account. Ensure the SIM is installed and the device has power before proceeding.

  1. Power on the tracker. Connect to the vehicle's power source or insert a charged battery. Wait for the status LED to show a slow blue pulse (searching for network).
  2. Open the Management Console. Log in to your tenant account and navigate to Devices → Add New Device.
  3. Enter the Registration Code. Scan the QR code on the device label or type the Registration Code manually. The platform validates the code and associates the device with your tenant.
  4. Assign a license level. Select the appropriate license level (L0–L4) for this device. The level determines which features are available. You can change it at any time from the device settings.
  5. Confirm first check-in. The device downloads its per-device credentials and checks in. The status in the console changes to Active and the LED turns solid green. Activation is complete.
Timing

First check-in typically takes 60–90 seconds after entering the Registration Code, depending on cellular signal strength.

For the full LED reference during this process, see LED Indicators.

Enrollment Best Practices

  • Enroll in batches during off-peak hours to avoid network congestion on your tenant account.
  • Label each device with an internal asset tag before enrollment — easier to match physical units to portal entries.
  • Pre-assign license levels in a spreadsheet before starting, so enrollment flows without decisions mid-batch.
  • Test in an open-sky location for first check-in — indoor enrollment may fail due to weak GPS or cellular signal.
  • Store Registration Codes securely — export the device list from the portal immediately after enrollment as a backup record.
  • Do not power-cycle the device during the first check-in window — wait for the solid green LED before moving the unit.

Activation Troubleshooting

ProblemSolution
Registration Code rejectedVerify you are entering the code exactly as printed — it is case-sensitive. Ensure the code has not already been used on another device. Contact support if the issue persists.
Device stuck on slow blue pulse (no network)Confirm the SIM is properly seated with PIN lock disabled. Move to an area with stronger signal. Check that the SIM data plan is active with your carrier.
Device never reaches solid green after code entryWait at least 3 minutes — first credential download can be slow on weak connections. Check the portal for any error messages against the device. Try power-cycling if no progress after 5 minutes.
Portal shows device as Pending after activationThe device has validated but not yet completed its first data check-in. This usually resolves within 2–5 minutes once the device has GPS lock and cellular connectivity.
Activation succeeded but device shows wrong license levelLicense levels can be updated at any time in the Management Console under Devices → License. Changes apply at the device's next check-in.
